I'm surprised they even let the pigs go, the way they breed you think you could kill every one you catch and still be over run by them. Other then that I really don't think what you were doing is any crueler then fishing, but I think fishing is crueler then hunting really. I mean don't the catch dogs only grab the pigs by the ears to start with?

Hi Arisk,
I agree it isn't, and yes Catch Dogs instinctively go for a ear or cheek, or they wouldn't be able to stay out of harms way. Feral Hogs are tough to say the least, and I would be real apprehensive when it comes to a Big Eurasian Boar with dogs, they can go through some good dogs in short order.
I have hunted both and I had quite a experiance with a Russian Boar. I had one charge me after I had shot it with my "45-70". I then shot at three more times before it started looking for a way out. Pound for pound others, including myself, think they are the toughest critter's created.
There's a picture of the Hog I mentioned posted on my gallery at cabinfeveronline.net or theHunter.com if you want to take a look at it. Nice hearing from you

PS. I'm sponsoring another tourney with trophys to the winners if you would like to join us. The rules and objectives are posted on our home page at CFO

Oh ya, those pigs are some mean buggers.
Did you get the one Russian some where here in Michigan? I could have sworn I seen that hog pic up on Michigan Sportsmen forum, not sure if you surf that or not.
Also i seen that salmon pic of yours, I happen to have one just like it myself actually.

I haven't been up that way in a few years though but when we went a couple of times with Mi-Hi and always did pretty well. I think we got a 4 person limit the few times we went. Also we went with them on Erie for walleye a couple of times and did pretty well.

Yes I did in the Upper Penninsula, Negaunee to be exact. Michigan Sportsman
was it a picture of me? or were the surroundings just the same. I'm just curious

Actually I just surfed the forum and I think I found the thread I was thinking of and its not the same pic as yours, guess the world isn't quite that small. The guy in the thread said he went to David's Hog Wild in Northland, MI so it's not quite the same area either.
Anyways heres the message board/site I was talking about, it usually has quite a bit of interesting stuff, not sure if you've ever been there. http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/index.html

Hog catching is getting pretty common around here. I have no problem with it at all. Some say its cruel but I disagree. The dogs love what they are doing, and its just nature running its course. Also hogs are a major nuisance and can really put a hurt on a deer population. Around here non of the hogs are native, they are all feral hogs that broke loose or were released. MAny areas down here have had there deer hunting ruined due to the introduction of hogs. That is why the dog hunting method is used, it works really really well. But unfortunately you can never elimnate the suckers they multiply far too quickly. I have never heard of just ctaching and releasing them though, most people take them in and "feed them out". They put them in a pen and feed them corn for a while, claiming that it makes them taste better. Others kill and leave them in the woods, which may seem cruel at first but you have to be understandable of the situation, and honestly the meat does not go to waste coyotes, bob cats, other animals, and even hogs eat it. I really don't see need in feeding them out. I shot a 250lbs. bore and he tasted just fine! Alot of people dont even keep a bore that says, claiming that the meet with taste bad. YOu just have to cut off the testicles as soon as you kill it, and you should not have a problem. Kind off went off topic ish but oh well..haha

I wouldn't mind trying boar meat myself but noone around - lol.
The testicles on the other hand I'd leave for others to utilize.
Good post doublej. Bet the hog hunts are exciting.

Just to clear on the the cutting of the testicles part, it is said that by leaving them on longer then a hour after the boar has died can make the meat tast musky, that is why we do that when we kill a boar. Some people do actually fry them up and eat them
